NEW YORK (AP) — Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel has won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first freshman to win college football’s most prized individual award. The redshirt freshman beat out Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein. A few days after turning 20, Manziel became the most inexperienced player to win the Heisman. Adrian Peterson had come closest as a freshman, finishing second to Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart in 2004. (AP) – A lawyer for former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky says his client has gotten his fighting spirit back after his child abuse conviction and sentencing.  Attorney Karl Rominger saysSanduskyhopes prison officials will find a way to house him under less restrictive conditions.  Rominger met withSanduskyfor several hours Friday at Greene State Prison in southwestern Pennsylvania. Columbia County crash on ice Friday

  MILLVILLE – Ice caught five Friday morning commuters by surprise in Columbia County. The traffic accident happened on an icy section of Route 42; it sent two people to Geisinger Medical Center. Treated and released were Jessi McCarty of Orangeville, and Amber Schon of Cogan Station.   State troopers say the accident near Millville happened when McCarty’s SUV slid into the oncoming lane and hit Schon’s vehicle. Several other vehicles then were caught up in the mishap. There were no other injuries. McCarty will be cited for driving at an unsafe speed. Multiple emergency responders were present at that Columbia County wreck Friday morning.     Follow

SUNBURY – A Sunbury mother of three, who asked not to be identified, says her part-time minimum-wage job doesn’t pay enough to let her buy holiday gifts for her daughters.  “I just found myself at a hard time right now,” she said, explaining why she has applied for help from the Salvation Army.  Two of the daughters are adults, 22 and 20, and the youngest is 8. The mom says the 20-year-old lives with her and her younger sibling and helps with the rent and other expenses. Her youngest daughter understands the family’s situation, but she would like “girl things,” such as Monster High dolls, clothes for a Barbie doll and nail art supplies. The…

Needy Family Fund makes progress

  SUNBURY — The Needy Family Fund has so far reached $20,898 of its $75,000 goal. Recent donations to the fund include a $300 from St. John Lutheran Church of Richfield. A $500 donation was received from Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village Residents of Lewisburg. Rounding out the current total are $90 in donations from anonymous givers.   Each year, The Daily Item, the Salvation Army of Milton and Sunbury, Susquehanna Bank and the radio stations of Sunbury Broadcasting Corporation team up to raise money for families in need.
