Four caught with marijuana in Union County

WINFIELD — Police caught four Union County males in possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.  Milton State Police discovered the four at a home on Strawbridge Rd. in Buffalo Township around 5:30p.m. Wednesday. The oldest, 19-year-old Trae William Doebler of Winfield, is being charged with corruption of minors and drug offenses.  The other three accused are 15, 16 and 17-year-old males from Lewisburg.  The minors are being charged with drug offenses.

Car crash today near Gowen City

  GOWENCITY – A crash near GowenCity Saturday morning sent one person to the hospital in a Life Flight helicopter. The crash at 2:19am happened on Route 125 in EastCameronTownship when a car went off the road and hit a pole. Troopers say 38-year-old James Edmondson of Ashland was flown to GeisingerMedicalCenter.   A nursing supervisor says he is in ‘fair’ condition. Stonington state police are investigated and say a traffic citation will be issued to Edmonson. EastCameronTownship and CoalTownship volunteers responded. No other information is available yet today.  

90 busted in Northumberland County

  ELYSBURG – Approximately 90 people have been arrested on various drug charges in Northumberland County Friday.  Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini announced that the Northumberland-Montour Drug Task Force filed criminal charges against individuals based on a culmination of investigations into drug activity in the last 12 months.   Drugs involved include heroin, morphine, cocaine, amphetamine, Percocet, methadone, Marijuana, and 12 others. Command centers were established in the RalphoTownship gymnasium and the SunburyMunicipalBuilding to process the defendants. The roundup began around 7:00a.m. Friday morning.  (Codi Jade)

  SUNBURY — A former county district attorney says schools have made an effort to prepare for incidents like the one that happened in Connecticut Friday. Robert Buehner Jr., former MontourCountyDA said, “Its think its just human nature to ‘personalize’ it meaning, asking ‘What happens if it happens in our school district?’   He said it could be, “Milton, Lewisburg, Selinsgrove, Shikellamy, Danville, etc. And the most important thing is to have a plan, a well thought out plan, organized plan when something happens.” Buehner is a regular guest on The Steve Jones Show and Friday he talked about what he called the, “Horror in Connecticut…” You can hear more of his remarks at www.wkok.com.

Dozens gathered in Cameron Park for vigil

  SUNBURY — The former HigherHopeMinistries church, known now as H2church, held prayer vigil Friday night in Cameron Park in Sunbury. From 5:30 to 6pm, they prayed for victims, families and others affected by the Sandy   HookElementary School shooting. Several dozen people were in the park as the group sang, held hands, and discussed the Connecticut school shooting.

    MILTON — Out of work for five years, single mother Jannette Quinones is inching back into the workplace by volunteering at a Valley insurance firm. “I’m answering phones and doing paperwork, getting experience,” she said. “It could lead to a paying job.”   Quinones said she hasn’t had full-time employment since her youngest child was born with various disabilities. “I’ve struggled to find a baby-sitter, someone who understands her issues,” said Quinones, who also has a 10-year-old. As she looks for work to support her family and childcare for her daughter, Quinones said other issues have surfaced that make it difficult to get on solid financial footing. Needy Family Fund makes progress

  SUNBURY — The Needy Family Fund has so far reached $45,697 of its $75,000 goal.  Recent donations to the fund include a $400 donation from Dalton Savidge of Selinsgrove.  A $250 donation was received from Ellis and Alice Wood of Shamokin Dam.  A $15 donation was received in memory of Robert Coup of CoalTownship.   Rounding out the current total are $330 in donations from anonymous givers.  Each year, The Daily Item, the Salvation Army of Milton and Sunbury, Susquehanna Bank and the radio stations of Sunbury Broadcasting Corporation team up to raise money for families in need.   The Salvation Army distributes toys, food, clothing, and gifts to eligible families.     HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Pennsylvania flags across the state are being lowered to half-staff at state buildings in honor of the Connecticut school shooting victims and their families. Gov. Tom Corbett ordered the action Friday afternoon. Corbett and his wife, Susan, extended their condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the tragedy.
