PENNS CREEK — A Danville man was hurt in a motorcycle crash in Center Township, Snyder County on Friday. State police say 28-year-old Robert Boyer was traveling north on Route 104 around 11 a.m. when he drove off the road and struck a utility pole support cable. Boyer was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained minor injuries . He was wearing a helmet. (Ali Stevens) Follow

Callers will soon need to dial the area code

HARRISBURG — The state Public Utility Commission has announced that dialing local numbers will require entering the 570 area code starting September 21st. The change is needed because of a new area code, 272, which will be given to consumers receiving a new phone number starting October 21st. Anyone who applies for a new number will receive the new 272 area code. The new area code was needed since all 570 numbers have been exhausted. (Ali Stevens) Follow

Mourning a Navy SEAL from Elizabethville

PHOENIX (AP) – Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of a Navy SEAL from Pennsylvania who was killed during a parachute training exercise in southern Arizona. Brewer says the death of 31-year-old Special Warfare Operator Chief Brett Shadle illustrates the risks service members face at home and abroad.  Shadle was from Elizabethville and stationed in Virginia.  He was married and had a 2-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter.  He graduated from Upper Dauphin High School in 2000. Home destroyed by fire near Herndon

HERNDON — A home was destroyed by fire near Herndon on Saturday morning. The fire started around 7:30 a.m. at a home at the intersection of Hooflander and Slutter Valley Roads in Washington Township.   Multiple volunteer fire companies responded and remained on the scene for five hours trying to bring the blaze under control. A state police fire marshal will investigate the cause of the fire. The home is owned by 75-year-old William Whary, who was not at home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries reported. High-speed chase, and an arrest, on Route 15

  MILTON – Speeds exceeded 90-miles per hour on Route 15 Friday afternoon as state troopers chased a man ‘from our region’ who was fleeing from troopers. The incident ended when police used what they called a ‘pit manuver’ to crash the man’s truck. He was stopped on Crossroads Drive, still resisted and was subdued with the help of an electroshock weapon.   No police were injured but two police cars were damaged. The man was initially treated at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg, and then flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Record amount of money distributed by the United Way

SUNBURY – A record amount of money will be distributed by the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way to support programs making a difference in our communities. United Way President and CEO Keri Albright says $908,000 will be allocated to programs focused on their six priorities for impact, which include transportation, early childhood education, diversity, drug and alcohol abuse, poverty and at-risk teens.   Also this year, there will be money for emergency services. McClure man hurt in a Snyder County crash

MCCLURE — A McClure man was hurt in a crash early this (Friday) morning in West Beaver Township, Snyder County. State police say 23-year-old Michael Maloyed was driving on Stull road at Steeley Road around 3:30 a.m. when he lost control of his car and struck a tree.   Maloyed sustained moderate injuries in the crash and was taken to Evangelical Community Hospital and then transferred to another hospital. His condition is not known. The investigation into the crash will continue.   Follow

Danville man hospitalized after a Washingtonville crash

WASHINGTONVILLE — A Danville man is hospitalized at Geisinger Medical Center following a crash on Routes 254 and 54 in Washingtonville Thursday. The crash happened just before noon when 66-year-old Carl Flora of Danville reported ran a red light at the intersection and struck another vehicle, driven by 59-year-old Kevin Mains of Shamokin.   Flora was taken to Geisinger and is listed in fair condition today.
