Pa. girl who took on organ donor gets lung

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl whose efforts to qualify for a transplant drew public debate over how organ donation should be done is getting a new lung.   A spokeswoman for Sarah Murnaghan’s family said that Murnaghan, who suffers from severe cystic fibrosis, is receiving the transplant Wednesday.   The decision came just days after a federal judge granted her family’s request to suspend a rule that prevented her from getting an adult lung.   Murnaghan’s mother, Janet, says the family is “overwhelmed with emotions” and thanks all her supporters. She says, “Today is the start of Sarah’s new beginning and new life.”   Follow

Prison discussion in Snyder County

MIDDLEBURG – A prison board meeting will be held in Snyder County Thursday, where the prison board will do some long-range planning when it comes to incarceration and corrections. Snyder County Commissioner Malcolm Derk says they will be looking at all options available to them regarding alternative sentencing.   Derk said, “Possibly day reporting might be good. We had the opportunity to visit Union County on Monday and saw their new day reporting center and how it works. It helps non-violent offenders get their GED’s and also helps with other educational barriers, working on those barriers to help individuals gain employment.”   They will also be looking at electronic monitoring. Man jailed for burglary in Northumberland County


TURBOTVILLE — A 26-year-old man is locked up in the Northumberland County Prison, charged with stealing from a home in Turbot Township. State police say 26-year-old Branden Mummey broke into a home through a locked rear door along Paradise Road on June 6th. Mummey has been charged with stealing a play station device and about 30 video games. He faces counts of burglary, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking and criminal mischief. Northumberland woman pleads guilty to theft


DANVILLE — A Northumberland woman has pleaded guilty to stealing from her great-aunt by using her power of attorney status. The Press Enterprise reports 48-year-old Elizabeth Peterson stole nearly $16,000 from the woman, using the money to help pay her son’s college tuition at Susquehanna University and to pay for personal expenses.   The victim was in a nursing home in Mahoning Township and needed someone to handle her financial affairs, so she granted power of attorney to Peterson. Trial was scheduled to begin this week, but Peterson decided to plead guilty to three felony charges. She faces several years in prison when she is sentenced. (Ali Stevens) Follow

Penn State legal bills top $45m

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – The legal bills keep piling up for Penn State related to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. A university website updated costs for the scandal this week. The total as of the end of March was more than $45.8 million, covering legal fees along with consulting work and other associated costs. The total is up roughly $1.4 million from the previous month.   Most of that increase, about $1.1 million, is attributed to legal defense fees for the university, or employees or former employees entitled to representation. Live music in Cameron Park: SUNBURY—You can enjoy live music on a summer evening in Sunbury. Cameron Park’s weekly Music in the Park took place on Tuesday night with the band Past Country playing. Past Country consist of Spike Stom and Jim McClincy. McClincy, who is a retired postman, talked about why they like performing in the park saying, “We wanted to be just a couple of good old boys sitting on the back porch playing and that’s what we do. Historical tour celebrating Union County’s Bicentennial


LEWISBURG – A historical tour of eastern Union County will take place on Sunday as part of Union County’s ongoing Bicentennial Celebration. This is part one of a three part series on the historic sites featured on the tour.   The Historic Ramblings Tour begins Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and one of the stops is the Tuscan Villa, which was built in 1856 in Lewisburg.
