Groundbreaking for Fort Augusta model: SUNBURY – Many people may remember the model of Fort Augusta, which stood in Sunbury for nearly 40 years until the 1980’s.  “We would stop by, walk around and look at the little houses.  It was exciting,” says Jinny Treas, who now lives in Shamokin Dam, but is a native of Sunbury. Mustang to help “Drive Out Cancer”

Some backlash to United Way decision

Armed robbery trial delayed again


SUNBURY – An armed robbery trial in Northumberland County has been delayed again. The News Item reports Erik Harrington of Selinsgrove was scheduled for a jury trial on August 1st, but the trial was delayed Friday, following a pre-trial conference where the defendant chose not to enter into a plea agreement.   Harrington’s attorney requested to postpone the two-day trial until October and President Judge Robert Sacavage agreed. Harrington was one of four suspects in an armed robbery at the residence of 55-year-old James Honecker of Paxinos, who suffers from multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheelchair. Police say in July of 2005, Harrington, 26-year-old Kasey Sees, formerly of Sunbury, and two others, entered…

Camp counselor charged with sexual assault


MILLVILLE – A camp counselor, who worked with kids at Camp Victory, has been charged with sexually assaulting a hearing-impaired girl. The Press Enterprise reports Karisa Zapotocky is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old camper in a shower house during Camp Hero, a week-long program at Camp Victory for deaf and hearing-impaired children.   Zapotocky first denied the assault, but police report she changed her story and claimed it was consensual. The 20-year-old faces felony indecent assault charges for the incident two years ago. The victim was examined at a hospital after the assault. Zapotocky is free on bail and has a court hearing this week on charges including aggravated indecent assault, institutional sexual assault…

Teen killed in a crash outside Sunbury


SUNBURY – One person is dead following a crash early this morning on Snydertown Road in Upper Augusta Township, Northumberland County. State police say 18-year-old Marcelle Barber of Mount Carmel drove off the right side of the road and the vehicle rolled over. Barber was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.   Three passengers were injured. They were identified as 21-year-old Tyler Karycki of Mount Carmel, 18-year-old Brianna Bailey of Kulpmont and 19-year-old Hasan Abuomar of Mount Carmel. Karycki and Bailey were taken to Geisinger Medical Center. Abuomar was taken to Sunbury Community Hospital.   The crash took place between Anthracite Road and Cold Run Hollow Road. Sunbury auctioning properties today

SUNBURY – The city of Sunbury is holding public auctions to sell two properties that they have fixed up. The Sunbury Redevelopment Authority will host an auction at 6 p.m. this evening at 700 North Seventh Street, where people can bid on the home. Another auction is being held at 6:30 p.m. at 1106 and 1116 Miller Street, which is a double lot. Those who bid on the homes are required to provide the city with their plans to fix up the blighted properties. Sunbury Mayor David Persing will serve as the auctioneer. (Ali Stevens)   Follow
