SUNBURY — Crews from across Northumberland County responded to a fire in Sunbury Monday evening.  According to Emergency Services, the fire was at a home on North 5th Street in the city.  The fire was reported just before 6:00p.m.  Witnesses say no flames were visible outside the home. No injuries were reported.  Emergency responders cleared the scene by 6:30.  (Codi Jade)   Follow

Susquehanna President appointed to NCAA Council

SELINSGROVE  – Susquehanna University’s president has a new duty.  President L. Jay Lemons has been appointed to the NCAA Division III Presidents Council.  Lemons will represent the Landmark Conference.   His term runs through January 2015.  The 18-member council is Division III’s primary governing body.  They oversee the management council and the committee structure.  The council meets on a quarterly basis and has budgetary oversight, as well as the authority to establish, direct and implement policies for the division.   Lemons said he is honored for the opportunity to serve the Landmark Conference and the NCAA.  He said, “All student-athletes at the Division III level are afforded educational experiences that are in many ways distinctive…

Lawyer: 25 of 31 expected to settle with PSU

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – A lawyer brought in to help Penn State resolve civil claims with the victims of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky says he expects 25 of 31 to be settled by the end of the week. Sandusky is serving a 30- to 60-year sentence in state prison for child sexual abuse. Attorney Michael Rozen said Monday that “the overwhelming majority” of the eight young men who testified against him last year are among the 25. A 25-year-old man from suburban Philadelphia, a trial witness referred to as “Victim 5,” became the first victim to finalize a deal on Friday. Truck fire in Northumberland County

HERNDON — A truck caught fire Monday afternoon in Northumberland County.  According to Emergency Services, a tractor trailer hauling wood shavings caught fire around 3:30p.m. in Lower Mahanoy Township.   The fire was located on Dairy Road and Emerick Lane.  The incident was taken care of by 4:30p.m.  No injuries have been reported.  The fire is reportedly not due to a crash.  (Codi Jade) Follow

SUNBURY — While summer is drawing to a close, the threat of West Nile Virus is no less present.  In fact, Amanda Witman of DEP says right now may be the most important time to take precautions.   “The birds begin to migrate south, and when that happens mosquitoes tend to feed on humans even more.   This increases your chances of contracting West Nile Virus,” Witman said.  “One of the best methods of prevention is of course removing any and all standing water on your property.  Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a tea spoon of standing water.  So any amount of standing water is bad standing water.”   Witman said most mosquitoes strike…

Reducing sediment runoff in your backyard

UNDATED – If you look at a stream after a significant rainfall, you may notice a color change due to sediment runoff.  This is one of the biggest pollutants to waterways in Pennsylvania, but district manager Bill Deitrick with the Union County Conservation District, says there are a few steps you can take in your own yard to help reduce sediment pollution. He says a critical area to look at is storm water runoff from house gutters.  “Create a rain garden downhill from the gutter.  The uptake of the plants will be significant of that water.  At minimal you could consider installing a rain barrel at the end of the gutter so you could use…

Safe and healthy fun in Snyder County

SELINSGROVE — A night of safe and healthy fun is coming to the Selinsgrove area next week.  Snyder County’s 1st annual Night Out will be Tuesday August 27. Organizers hope to promote a safer and healthier Snyder County by partnering the community with law enforcement and first responders.  Along with educational presentations, there will be free food and activities for all ages. Truck snags traffic on Route 15 south

MONTOURSVILLE –   Traffic was snagged on southbound Route 15 in Lycoming County for about an hour this afternoon.  According to state police in Montoursville, a disabled tractor trailer was blocking the roadway.   The incident occured around 12:30p.m.  Tow trucks and crews responded to the situation.  Police say the road was cleared by 1:30p.m.  (Codi Jade)   Follow

Union County Bicentennial event: Cemetery Tour

NEW BERLIN – The third in a series of four Union County Bicentennial cemetery walks is set for Wednesday evening in New Berlin. Those who attend will participate in a stroll through the New Berlin Cemetery, where they will meet residents from Union County’s past.   Stories include Samuel Baum, a gunsmith, Murray Kline, a World War I veteran, Dr. Lewis Wolfe, a physician, and many more.
