Shamokin Dam checkpoint aims to deter DUIs

SHAMOKIN DAM — The Shamokin Dam Police Department hotsted a DUI checkpoint Friday evening along Route 11/15 within the borough of Shamokin Dam and conducted a systematic check on over 650 vehicles. Police say 3 drivers were given sobriety checks for alcohol and nearly 25 other violations were investigated including vehicle registrations, open containers, and license violations. Police were assisted by the North Central Highway Safety Network, Union County Sheriff’s Department, both the Union and Snyder County Probation Departments and Police Departments from Middleburg and Northumberland. Inmate death reported in Northumberland County

COAL TOWNSHIP — There are reports of an on-going investigation into the death of an inmate at the State Correctional Institution in Coal Township. The News-Item reports that information from Northumberland County Coroner, James Kelley says a 33-year old male was pronounced dead in the prison around 3:30 Saturday morning. The inmate’s name is being withheld pending notification of family members. The Coroner’s Office, along with State Police, continue the investigation. District Attorney Tony Rosini was also notified, but there are no further details are available at this time.
