Snow snags traffic and activities Saturday


SUNBURY — A full day of snowfall had many impacts on roads and activities across The Valley.  Around 5:00p.m. Saturday PennDOT issued a 45MPH speed restriction on Interstate-80 and I-81.  Route 147 in Point Township was closed for a time following an accident.  Westbound I-80 was blocked for a time following a traffic accident.  The bridge over the Limestone Run interchange on I-80 was also blocked — a traffic detour forced motorists to go on the off-ramp and back on the on-ramp.   The snow also forced the Susquehanna Valley Chorale to cancel their Saturday performance of Amahl and the Night Visitors.  Saturday tickets are being honored Sunday and Monday.  You can find a full…

Late night fire at Northumberland County Prison


SUNBURY — It was a hectic night at the Northumberland County Prison.  According to emergency services, a fire broke out inside the prison around 9:00p.m. and prison guards called 911.  The Sunbury Fire Department and Sunbury police assisted at the scene.  Inmates were forced to wait outside in the prison yard, as snow was falling.   The fire was under control and crews cleared the scene around 10:00p.m.  Inmates were able to return to their cells.  No injuries were reported.  Shamokin Dam police assisted at the scene. U.S. Senator calls budget bill uniquely bipartisan


UNDATED — The budget bill passed by the House Thursday was a uniquely bipartisan moment.  So says U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) who says a decision like this is something the federal government has not had enough of. “Both sides are frustrated or don’t like aspects of the bill, but we know overall it is better to have some sort of budget certainty for a much longer time period.” The package would ease the harshest effects of automatic spending cuts set to hit the Pentagon and domestic agencies next month.  Casey says it reduces the deficit over time.  “There is up to $28 billion in savings over ten years.  That is pretty substantial, but candidly…
