Batteries and refrigerator among finds at Cleanup

SUNBURY — Nearly 90 volunteers took part in the Susquehanna River Cleanup Project this weekend. Boaters, kayakers and volunteers on foot went up and down the riverbanks picking up trash and pulling out garbage from the water. Volunteers found bottles, tires, lawn chairs, truck batteries and even an old refrigerator. Two pontoon boats served as “garbage barges” and helped to transport larger items. Registration began at the Sunbury ampitheater and groups of volunteers branched off to different sections of the river, spanning from Sunbury to just south of Lewisburg. Volunteers needed for adult literacy program

UNDATED – The Susquehanna Valley Reading Partners are looking for volunteer tutors. The program helps adults in The Valley with literacy. Sara Fry of the Reading Partners says it does not take much to be a volunteer, “All we ask is that you commit three hours a week with a student. We match you with a student and we will give you the books and teach you how to use the books. You have a lot of freedom; you meet up with the student at your own pace.” Fry says it is rewarding to volunteer and help people work toward gaining citizenship.
