Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen will perform in concert Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rooke Recital Hall of the Weis Music Building at Bucknell University. The program includes “Piano Pieces” by Sibelius, “Preludes” by Debussy and “Carnaval, Op. 9″ by Schumann. A highlight of the concert is the U.S. premieres of two works by Finnish composers Perttu Haapanen and Jaakko Kuusisto. The concert is free and open to the public.

Sculptor Sarah Tortora will showcase her work in Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Haas Gallery for the start of a new season of art. Her exhibit, “Yearning on the Diagonal,” will be on display from Friday, Dec. 19, to Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015. A reception for the exhibit will be held on Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a lecture at 1:15 p.m. Tortora is an adjunct professor at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Conn., where she teaches introductory and intermediate sculpture classes. An upcoming free “Smart Seniors” program at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village will focus on “the winter blues,” seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. SAD is a type of depression related to seasonal changes, notes Dr. Michael Hayes from Evangelical Hospital, Lewisburg, who will provide information on SAD and other forms of depressions and also offer tips to keep mood and motivation steady throughout the year.
