A pair of fire calls for Valley responders

SUNBURY — Northumberland County Communications said they dealt with two damaging fires overnight.

The first fire occurred on Fifth Street in Coal Township around 11:30 Friday night. The home, which is a former church, caught fire and was heavily damaged. An occupant of the home, Jeremy Weikel, was left temporarily homeless as a result.

No injuries reported at that blaze and the cause of the fire is not known. The building is the former Faith Reformed Chapel owned by Johanna McGinn. Volunteers were on the scene until around 4:30am Saturday.

In Sunbury, in the 400 block of Fairmont Avenue, a fire that may have started from an electrical problem damaged a residential structure. The SUN Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the occupants. No injuries reported and no other details are out yet.
