UPDATE: 5:30pm

From PennDOT: Southbound is in the southbound lane while northbound traffic will use the center lane. The northbound lane remains closed for hazmat cleanup operations, which are expected to continue well into the night tonight.  In order for the traffic backups to clear, motorists heading to that area are advised to use Route 15 for the next hour or two.

Raw footage of fatal accident plus statements from Point Township Police Chief Joshua VanKirk:

POINT TWP — One person is dead following a vehicle accident in Point Township Wednesday.  The crash happened around 11:30a.m. on Route 147 near 14th Street and involved a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck.  The driver of the pickup truck, whose name has not been released, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by the Northumberland County Coroner says Point Township Police Chief Josh VanKirk.

“Through our initial investigations, a pickup truck was driving in the southbound lane and veered across both the center lane and the northbound lane where it hit a tractor-trailer.  Witnesses to the accident say they did not see any indications of corrective action, which would mean several different things, including that a driver could be asleep.”

Police say the driver of the pickup truck was not wearing a seatbelt.  After coming in contact with the pickup truck, the tractor-trailer hit a house.  “The truck travelled a short distance out of control and hit the front porch.  It did not seem as if it compromised any more of the house.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and no one was in the home at the time.  Emergency crews were on the scene reconstruction the accident and helping to clean a fuel spill from the tractor-trailer.  A portion of Route 147 remains closed as the investigation into the fatal crash continues.
