Another legislator remembers time with Phillips
SUNBURY – Former state representative in the 108th legislative district, Merle Phillips, has died at the age of 85. Phillips died this morning surrounded by his family. Former State Representative Russ Fairchild worked closely with Phillips for more than two decades.
Fairchild said, “When I first got to the legislature, I didn’t know Merle very well. But, we became close friends and worked together in Harrisburg on many projects. Merle was a man of his word, an excellent legislator and a close friend. He will be missed in this Valley.”
Fairchild was an 85th district house member.Phillips served the 108th district from 1980 until 2010. He was also appointed as a Northumberland County Commissioner in 2010 to finish the term of Kurt Masser, who went on to serve as a state representative. Prior to his election to the State House, Phillips was the president of Irish Valley Food Processing. He also served in the United States Marine Corps for four years of active duty and two years in the reserves. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. (Ali Stevens)
