Billboards may soon be found in Shamokin Dam
SHAMOKIN DAM — Electronic and digital billboards may soon be popping up along Routes 11 and 15 in Shamokin Dam. Borough Council is voting Monday on an ordinance allowing billboards up to 250 square feet to be located along the strip. Borough manager Ed Hovenstine said they didn’t have an ordinance in place allowing for digital billboards.
Hovenstine said, “The ordinance came about because there were some requests to install some billboards. We sat down with the advertising company and they actually were in on some of the planning of it because it just made a lot of sense to get an idea what was reasonable for everybody.”
Hovenstine said it was a fair compromise on all sides. He said, “What we wanted to make sure was that the integrity of the strip was kept. That some of the smaller signs wouldn’t be overwhelmed by a larger sign, keeping them away from residential areas and spacing them appropriately.”
Also, sexual material will not be allowed or flashing, scrolling or animated text. The borough is bound by state law to allow advertising along the strip, so the ordinance was needed. (Ali Stevens)
