Busy sports weekend: Central girls swim fash

LEWISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Leah Smith of Oakland Catholic has upset two-time Class AAA girls 200-freestyle champion Meaghan Raab of Hershey at the PIAA swimming and diving championships. Smith, a senior, finished in 1:45.52, just .42 of a second shy of Raab’s 2012 PIAA record in the 200 free, with an exceptional final leg to pull off one of the biggest upsets in meet history.

Smith is an accomplished distance swimmer and holds the Class AAA girls state record in the 500 freestyle. The 200 is her second-best event. Prior to Friday, Raab had never lost a race in the 200 free and had reset the state record four times – twice as a freshman and twice as a sophomore. Hershey has an overwhelming lead in the girl’s team race in Class AAA.

In the girls 200-yard medley relay this week, the Central Columbia girls came in second. They came in third in the 200-yard freestyle relay. One of their swimmers: Katie Saloky came in third in the 100 yard breaststroke. Central’s Beth Grazio came in fourth in the state in one of the individual events. Central Columbia then came in fourth in the women’s team rankings.
