Cardboard Regatta back for seventh year
SUNBURY — Nothing says Sunbury River Festival like some fun on the river. Sally Thomas Chairman of the Cardboard Boat Regatta Committee said they are excited to bring this family favorite back for a seventh year.
Thomas explained what the regatta is all about. “It’s basically a boat race where people build cardboard boats that are actually floatable,” she said. “They are decorated in any way that they want. They can be all sizes and shapes. They can hold anywhere from one person all the way up to, last year I think we had 17 people in one boat.”
The cardboard boats race around a short course and awards are given for several reasons, including fastest boat, most enthusiastic and best sinking boat.
Thomas said, “It’s a really fun event to watch. Last year we had like 500 spectators who really enjoyed watching. It’s a very colorful, fun family event. Last year we even had at least 45 boats on the water watching the Cardboard Boat Regatta.”
Thomas said while it is a blast just to watch, everyone above the age of 8 is welcome to participate. The Cardboard Regatta begins Saturday August 17 at 4:00p.m. You can find more information about the regatta, including tips on boat creation and rules online at http://sunburyriverfestival.com/portfolio-item/cardboard-regatta/.
