Collecting unwanted prescriptions across the region
SUNBURY – It’s time to collect your unwanted and unfinished prescription drugs and turn them over to police for proper disposal. National Drug Take Back Day is Saturday and local police departments are participating in the effort from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini explained why it’s important to turn in the drugs you aren’t using.
Rosini said, “We have homes broken into and drugs stolen. It’s a good idea to get them out of your medicine cabinet and have them disposed of properly. Some people think that flushing them down the toilet is the way to get rid of drugs. All that does is put it in the water supply and pollutes the water supply for marine animals and eventually ourselves.”
All drugs will be collected with no questions asked, including pills, patches and liquids in containers. No needles used to administer drugs will be taken.
Rosini said there are plenty of locations set up as drop-off sites in our area counties. To find a full list of drop-off sites, visit the website www.awarerx.org. (Ali Stevens)
