Countdown to deer season begins!
HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s only unofficial holiday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, marks the opening of the two-week deer season. Approximately 750,000 hunters are expected to take to the woods that day. Antler restrictions in place this year mirror those from the previous years. Wildlife Conservation Officer Dirk Remensnyder talks about the deer management program.
Remensnyder said, “If the Game Commission estimates they want to take a certain number of deer out of the population in a management unit, they will issue three times that amount of tags to try to get to that goal. Data shows it takes three hunting tags to harvest a deer.”
He said the Pennsylvania Game Commission has very good data from years and years of research. So, if someone complains there are too many or too little doe tags available, they have data to back up their decisions.
