Donkey Basketball in Sunbury

SUNBURY – It’s become a regular annual attraction at Shikellamy High School. Donkey Basketball will return this week to the Field House, pitting the Shikellamy seniors against a team of seniors from other area high schools, called the Valley All Stars.

Ian Scheller is a senior at Shikellamy and feels his team has the edge in this year’s Donkey Basketball game. And what have they been doing to prepare? He said, “Well, a lot of hard work. We’ve been running practices. I rented six mules and our team has been practicing outside of my house.”

However, Gabby Pagana, senior at Selinsgrove High School, says the All Stars have the edge. She said, “About two weeks ago, I helped out with a clinic and we castrated a number of donkeys and horses. Let’s just say that donkeys aren’t very pleasant, but I got some up close experience that will prove helpful in the game.”

Slade Shreck organizes the event each year and says proceeds support the Daily Item’s Newspapers in Education program. Also this year, a dollar from every ticket sold will go to the Shikellamy 5th grade camp program. Donkey Basketball is Wednesday evening at the Shikellamy Field House at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7.00 at the door. (Ali Stevens)
