Donkey Basketball returns to Shikellamy Tuesday!
SUNBURY – The annual tradition of Donkey Basketball will return tomorrow (Tuesday) at Shikellamy High School to benefit the Daily Item’s Newspapers in Education program. The Shikellamy High School seniors will be facing off against the Valley All-Stars at the Shikellamy Field House beginning at 7 p.m. Captain for Shikellamy Ernie Tyler is ready to try out Donkey Basketball for the first time.
Tyler said, “Ever since I was a freshman, I’ve been going to the Donkey Basketball games every year. I was always really excited because it’s kind of like a privilege as a senior because it’s always kind of like the big thing you do at the end of the year, you play Donkey Basketball. I was really looking forward to it this year and I’m definitely excited to play.”
Shikellamy is facing off against the Valley All-Stars, comprised of senior players from area schools including Milton, Selinsgrove, Danville Line Mountain and Lewisburg. Brandon Smith of Lewisburg says they will be ready to win.
Smith joked, “We’ve been mentally preparing for the last couple of weeks. You know, iron sharpens iron and the mind will take you places, the body will fail you. We’ve been mentally preparing and we’re ready for this thing. I know my team has a lot of heart and I think that’s what will keep us in this thing.”
The public is encouraged to attend and cheer on their favorite athletes. Tickets are available at the door and all proceeds help the Daily Item provide free newspapers to area school districts to be used for educational purposes in the classroom. (Ali Stevens)
