Dramatic decrease in bears harvested this season
HARRISBURG – Preliminary bear season numbers are in and there was a dramatic decrease in the number of bears harvested this year. Early figures show just over 2,400 bears were harvested. Last year, 3,023 bears were taken in the three-day season. The largest bear harvested was taken November 20th in Greene Township, Pike County, weighing 706 pounds.
The top county for bear harvesting is Lycoming County, where more than 230 bears harvested. In our region, there were eight bears taken in Northumberland County, 59 in Union County and seven in Snyder County. There are still small parts of the state that have an extended bear season that started yesterday and will continue through Saturday.
