Evan helps Union County stay healthy
LEWISBURG – As Union County has been recognized as one of the healthiest counties in Pennsylvania again this year, the local hospital can take some of the credit. Sheila Packer is the Director of Community Health Education at Evangelical Community Hospital. She said the hospital does a needs assessment every three years to identify how they can make the area healthier.
Packer said, “We use those reports as a guide… The hospital really tries to take a look at those and tries to gear our programming and offerings around those things. Whether it is physical activity, weight loss, and nutrition or tobacco cessation.”
She said while second place out of 67 counties is something to be proud of, people can always get healthier. She recommends that everyone “just be more aware of your health. Be more active. Take a more active role in knowing your numbers. Meaning, understanding your blood pressure, your body composition, and your blood studies.”
Packer said even beyond the hospital, Union County has a lot of great opportunities that help its people to live a healthy lifestyle. She said there are a lot of useful resources, from the thriving downtown, to the outdoor trails and recreation areas.
