I-80 now open following fatal crash
WHITE DEER — I-80 westbound is now open, following an early morning fatal accident. State police in Milton say the collision between a Greyhound bus and a tractor-trailer in Union County has killed one person and sent dozens of others to hospitals.
Police said a woman was killed in the crash shortly before 2:00a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 80 westbound in White Deer Township. The crash reportedly occured as the bus ran into the back of the tractor for unknown reason.
According to Geisinger Medical Center, two crash victims are currently in critical condition at their facility. They have four in serious condition, and 6 in fair condition. Evangelical Community Hospital reports they have seen a total of 14 victims in their emergency room and all have been stabilized. Additional victims were transported to Susquehanna Health, Muncy Valley and Lock Haven.
The bus was heading nonstop from New York City to Cleveland, Ohio. Police have identified 46 of the 50 passengers as folks from several American states including Kentucky, New York and Ohio, as well as Russia, the Dominican Republic and Sweden. The passengers ranged from ages 18 – 70-years-old. The deceased woman has not yet been identified.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed following the crash, and were not reopened until 4:00p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
