Inmates fight at Northumberland County Courthouse

SUNBURY – It was a busy day for pre-trial conferences at the Northumberland County Courthouse on Friday and two inmates got into a fight while being detained there. The News Item reports 18 inmates were being held in three small detaining cells adjacent to the sheriff’s department when the fight broke out around 11:40 a.m.

Witnesses say one inmate attacked another while yelling racial slurs. President Judge Robert Sacavage called for extra security for the remainder of the busy court day, where 125 pre-trial conferences were scheduled. No injuries were reported.

Inmate Matthew Katona, a 22-year-old state prisoner being housed at the county jail is now charged with attacking 20-year-old Leon Hastings of Sunbury. Hastings was being held on charges related to a brawl in the city on Memorial Day, which led to the stabbing of two people. (Ali Stevens)
