Fire burns itself out in Middleburg
MIDDLEBURG — A Middleburg family is homeless after their rental house was damaged by a fire that–went out by itself. Middleburg Fire chief Butch Hackenberg said the fire started in the basement when no one was home–then burned itself out. No damage estimate is available.
He said the basement had extensive fire damage and there was heavy smoke damage throughout the rest of the structure. He said the fire smothered itself in the sealed basement. The cause is under investigation and is considered accidental. The home is owned by Neil Courtney.
The Red Cross is helping the five members of the Michael Oldt family. No injuries were reported. One dog died in the fire but another survived. The afternoon blaze was reported when the family contacted the chief around 4:30pm to say their house had been damaged by the fire.
