Firefighter injured battling Atlas fire

ATLAS — A fire that heavily damaged a home in Atlas early this morning may have been intentionally set. The News Item reports the fire started in the basement of a home at 524 W. Girard Street and is being investigated as suspicious according to Mount Carmel Township Fire Marshal Brian Hollenbush.


The fire heavily damaged a two-story home and an adjacent home at 526 W. Girard. It is not known if anyone was currently living in the home where the fire originated. The resident in the adjacent home, 47-year-old Randy Merlo, escaped safely with his dog.


Strong Fire Chief Tim Shincowich suffered a leg injury and was treated at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital. The investigation continues. (Ali Stevens)
