Remembering Northumberland’s Gretchen Brosius
NORTHUMBERLAND – A former mayor in Northumberland has died after a lengthy illness. Gretchen Brosius served as mayor for 10 years before resigning in July of 2011. She died last night at the age of 68. Current Mayor Len Zboray said she was a dedicated community volunteer.
Zboray said, “This certainly is a sad day for the borough of Northumberland. She was so instrumental in our borough. She loved the borough of Northumberland. She was seen walking and driving through the borough daily. She just cared so much and loved all the people in the borough.”
Zboray said Brosius was known for securing funding for the new municipal building, which was the old Second Street School. Jane Sanders-Ressler is former borough secretary and clerk in Northumberland and spoke fondly of her friend.
Sanders-Ressler said, “She was a very outgoing and caring person. She had the borough at heart and tried to do everything she could to help the borough. She was a very religious person. She prayed for the borough all the time. I’m sure some of her prayers were answered.”
Brosius was a 1963 graduate of Northumberland High School. Her husband is attorney Gene Brosius, who is still very active in the community. Flags are at ½ staff in Northumberland following the passing of Gretchen Brosius. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. (Ali Stevens)
