Free classes to help families with a food budget

SUNBURY — If you are struggling to provide food for your family, the Penn State Extension is looking to help.  They are hosting a series of free classes called Eat Right When Money’s Tight.

Cynthia Clayton of Penn State Extension says the goal is to help families make their food budget stretch the entire month.  “We teach fun easy recipes and things families can make on their food budget.  We talk about couponing, where to shop to get the best prices, how to read food labels and how to know when you’re eating healthy.”

Clayton says there will be a number of freebies as well for those who attend.  “Each class will include a free lunch and whatever recipe we cook that day for lunch, participants will be able to take the ingredients home to make that meal for their families.”

To qualify for the free program, families must be caring for a child under 20 and be eligible for WIC, reduced lunch or other limited resource programs.  The first of eight classes starts Thursday from 11:00a.m.-1:00p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Sunbury.  To register call 570-988-3950.
