Girls on the Run 5K race is Saturday

SELINSGROVE – The Girls on the Run Fall 5K race is this Saturday at Susquehanna University and hundreds are registered to participate. Cheryl Stumpf is executive director of Girls on the Run Susquehanna Valley and says all girls in grades 3 through 5 who participate in Girls on the Run will take part in Saturday’s race.

Stumpf said, “It’s our culminating event, because it comes at the end of the 10 weeks that the girls have been training to run a 5K. Girls on the Run is not a running program, although we creatively integrate the running into our curriculum. We talk about things like bullying, peer pressure and body image and girls are taught how to be critical in their thinking when looking at an advertisement or when hearing other girls talk about what it means to be beautiful.”

Meredith McLean is the director of the 5K race. She said, “The race is going to be held at Susquehanna University. Our start time will be 10 a.m. and the doors will open at 8. We are open to day of race registrations at this point. There will be lots of fun activities throughout the day including a great Zumba kickoff, you can do your hair, you can take the pinky swear with the girls and you can see all the girls cross the finish line, which is really the best part of the race.”

Selinsgrove 3rd grader Cassidy Kibler explains that the girls will have their pinky nail painted blue the day of the race, which they call the “Blue Pinky Swear”. She said, “It represents non-bullying and that you are always going to be nice. If somebody bullies you, you can stand up to them and say you don’t want to be bullied anymore.”

The Girls on the Run 5K race is open to all runners and will be chip timed. You can register the day of the race for $25.00. The race registration will take place at the indoor track at Susquehanna University Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. (Ali Stevens)
