Girls on the Run expands into two more counties
SELINSGROVE — Girls on the Run of the Greater Susquehanna Valley has announced they are now expanding into Northumberland and Montour Counties. The program is currently found in school districts in Snyder and Union County, but will now be available in all seven school districts in Northumberland County and in the Danville School District.
Cheryl Stumpf is executive director of the Girls on the Run program. She said, “This is way beyond my strategic plan when I initially started Girls on the Run in the Valley. I intended to expand into Northumberland County, but that wasn’t going to happen for several years yet. But, we have saturated Union and Snyder Counties, so this opportunity came about.”
Stumpf said they applied to expand through Girls on the Run International and received approval this week. She says the next step is finding volunteer coaches for all of the school districts.
Stumpf said, “With that expansion, we have to really focus on developing our volunteer base, because it’s a commitment to be with the girls two days a week after school.”
Fundraising is also an important aspect of the expansion of the program. Those wanting to sponsor the 5K race or support the program can visit the website www.girlsontherunsusquehannavalley.org.
Girls on the Run is a program that teaches girls in grades 3 to 5 important information about body image, self-esteem, bullying and friendships. They also will complete a 5K race and a community service project. The fall session begins the week of September 9th. (Ali Stevens)
