Girls on the Run needs coaches
SELINSGROVE – You can help young girls build confidence and stay healthy by becoming a coach for Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run of the Susquehanna Valley is looking for volunteer coaches to help with their upcoming fall season. Cheryl Stumpf is executive director of Girls on the Run and said, “Because we are experiencing exponential growth in the Valley we are seeking more volunteer coaches”
Coaches will help teach the girls to reach their greatest potential with an emphasis on youth development. Stumpf said, “Running is not necessarily the emphasis of the program. We are engaging in conversations about the different developmental needs and the issues the girls are dealing with beginning in 3rd grade.” Some of those topics include peer pressure, bullying, self-esteem, body image and choosing friends.
With a large number of sites, about 50 volunteer coaches are needed for each season. There are teams of girls in grades 3 through 5 and 6 through 8 in school districts across Northumberland, Snyder, Union and Montour Counties. Coaches do not need to be runners.
