Governor saddened by Phillips’ death
HARRISBURG – Governor Tom Corbett said he was “saddened to hear of the passing of Merle Phillips.” Corbett issued a statement Monday, just hours after the former legislator passed.
“He leaves a legacy of a full life, well lived in service to others. As a United States Marine, a successful businessman, a state representative and a Northumberland County Commissioner, Merle helped to build a better Pennsylvania for all of us and continued his service well past the age that most other people retire.
“His time spent in the military demonstrated that he lived a life marked in valor with a great appreciation for his country. Susan and I extend our deepest sympathies to Helen and the family.”
Phillips died Monday morning at the age of 85. He served in the state House of Representatives for more than 30 years. (Codi Jade)
