Groundbreaking at outdoor adventure area

SHAMOKIN – Friday is an exciting day for the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area Authority.   A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the proposed trailhead in Coal Township.

Jim Backes is the chairman of the AOAA Authority.  He said, “The groundbreaking is the start of our construction.  We are leasing 6,500 acres and developing a great trailhead facility on that plot.  We’ll be doing a building and parking lot in that area.”

Senator John Gordner (R-27th, Berwick), Representative Kurt Masser (R-107th, Elysburg), county commissioners, authority members, the secretary of DCNR and Coal Township Commissioners are all expected to be at the groundbreaking.

Backes said, “We invited a lot of the people that helped to bring us to this point.  It’s been a long process, and we want to commemorate and celebrate the progress we’ve made.   Many people played a vital role in planning and developing this project.”

Backes said the Outdoor Adventure Area will be a great addition to The Valley.  Activities at the area will include, all-terrain vehicle riding, hiking, biking and horseback riding.

The groundbreaking is set to begin at 3:00p.m. at the trailhead at 4100 State Route 125, Coal Township.  Contracting work is set to begin within the next few weeks following the groundbreaking.  (Codi Jade)
