VIDEO HERE: Fire destroys Point Township home
POINT TWP – Fire destroyed a home in Point Township Monday. Crews were called to the Brian Long family home along Dogwood Lane off of Route 11 around 2:00p.m. George Geise of the Tuckahoe Fire Company says crews responded as quickly as they could, but the fire spread fast. “The fire was in the garage on the north of the house. The wind was coming out of the north and the fire spread to the home. We were hampered, being in a rural area, by trying to establish a water supply. It is what you see; pretty much a total loss.”
He said they were hampered by…wind and water, “Too much wind–pushed the fire through the garage, into–and through the home, and too little water. It always takes a while to set up a water transport, and we had to transfer water up a long driveway.” The family got their pets out but only escaped with the clothes on their backs.
The home sits up on a hill and fire crews had to send up water says Geise. “We established a water fill site at the bottom of the hill and we had a large diameter hose that we filled and pumped water to the pieces up here.”
Geise says the homeowner and three children were outside swimming when the fire broke out. No injuries were reported. The homeowner told Geise he was working on a vehicle in his garage and it was on a battery charger, but there is no word yet whether that caused the blaze.
The investigation continues. Crews from Snyder and Montour Counties assisted Northumberland County crews at the scene. (Sara Bartlett)
