Jail lawsuit can proceed in Northumberland County

SUNBURY – A man shot by Sunbury police earlier this month can proceed with a lawsuit. The suit is against the county jail for an alleged beating two years ago. 22-year-old Erick Trometter, claims he was beaten by prison guards when he was incarcerated at the Northumberland County Prison in 2012.  A motion was filed by Northumberland County attorneys to have the lawsuit dismissed, but a judge ruled the claims will go to trial.

Trometter remains hospitalized at Geisinger Medical Center after he was shot July 8 by acting Sunbury Police Chief Brad Hare.  Police say Trometter charged at Hare with a knife, forcing Hare to shoot him once.  Trometter reportedly assaulted his grandmother shortly before the incident with Officer Hare.  He has been charged with aggravated assault. Trometter also served  time at the Northumberland County Prison in 2012 for assaulting his grandmother with a spoon.  (Ali Stevens)
