Buildings being demolished following fire

ATLAS – Vacant buildings destroyed by fire Tuesday morning in Atlas are being demolished. Firefighters from all across the region were called to a large vacant building at 151 W. Girard Street Tuesday, just before 3 a.m. The fire then spread to an adjoining three-story structure. The fire also damaged an occupied home at 143-145 W. Girard Street.

The News Item reports Sean Thompson was sleeping in the home when the fire started and got out safely when emergency crews arrived. Route 61 was closed for most of the day while firefighters brought the fire under control and demolition work got underway. A state police fire marshal tells the News Item the cause of the fire is undetermined. (Ali Stevens)
