Last trial before retirement for president judge
SUNBURY — Thursday marked the final trial Robert Sacavage will hear as President Judge in Northumberland County. Sacavage announced his retirement in November. The bench trial was for 39-year-old Andres Torruella of Sunbury, in which he was sentenced 30 days to six months in prison for DUI and several other motor vehicle violations.
Though it was a last for Sacavage, it was also a first. It was Sacavage and First Assistant District Attorney Ann Targonski’s first trial held in abstentia, which means the defendant was not present.
According to Targonski, the trial was also significant because they utilized technological advances made by Sacavage where an expert witness testified via video from New Jersey, while simultaneously viewing video from the state police cruiser dash camcorder. (Sara Bartlett)
