HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – A trio of Democrats is poised to be sworn in to Pennsylvania’s three statewide row offices this week, signaling a new political dynamic in a Capitol that’s otherwise under Republican control. Ceremonies will be held Tuesday for Attorney General-elect Kathleen Kane, Auditor General-elect Eugene DePasquale and state Treasurer Rob McCord. It’s the first time in more than three decades Democrats have held all three offices.

EBENSBURG, Pa. (AP) – A Philadelphia man charged in a shooting death outside a western Pennsylvania public housing complex says he fired after the other man made an aggressive move. The (Johnstown) Tribune-Democrat says 31-year-old Marquis Neal took the stand yesterday in his own defense in the October 2011 slaying of 21-year-old J-Quan Lewis outside the Oakhurst Homes in Johnstown.

NEW YORK (AP) – The family of a Reddit co-founder who committed suicide in New York weeks before he was to go on trial on federal charges that he stole millions of scholarly articles is blaming prosecutors for his death. Twenty-six-year-old Aaron Swartz hanged himself Friday night in Brooklyn. In 2011, he was charged with stealing millions of scientific journals from a computer archive at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in an attempt to make them freely available. He had pleaded not guilty, and his federal trial was to begin next month. If convicted, he faced decades in prison. Swartz’s family said in a statement Saturday that his death “is the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach.” The U.S. attorney in Boston couldn’t be reached for comment.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Forget about the government minting a $1 trillion coin to solve its debt-limit crisis. Treasury Department spokesman Anthony Coley said Saturday that neither his department nor the Federal Reserve believes the law can or should be used to produce such a coin to avoid a coming battle with Congress over government borrowing.     Some of President Barack Obama’s liberal allies have been promoting the coin strategy. The government has reached its $16.4 trillion borrowing limit. By late February or early March, Treasury will run out of ways to cover debts and could begin defaulting on government loans. White House spokesman Jay Carney says Congress has two options at its disposal: either pay the tab for its spending or send the nation into default, which would have serious economic consequences.

Hagan defeated Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers, who took second, and Miss Oklahoma Alicia Clifton, who finished third. Hagan wins a $50,000 college scholarship and gets the crown for one year.
