Local United Way not alone in decision
SUNBURY – A former Boy Scout leader says the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way is not alone in their recent decision.
Greg Bourke was forced to resign as a scout leader in Kentucky when he revealed he was gay. He said, “There has been numerous other United Ways across the country over the last few years that have already defunded their local scout councils. Practically every week I learn of another United Way that has suspended funding. It is a trend that we see occurring.”
Bourke took the issue nationally and started a petition drive to have the United Way denounce the anti-gay policy. At last check, Burke said the petition had over 65,000 signatures.
“What is going to make this right, is going to be when the Boy Scouts of America fully includes all people — regardless of any age or any sexual orientation – into its membership policy,” Bourke said.
If you would like to sign the petition, you can find it online at www.change.org and search Greg Bourke. Bourke was a call in guest on WKOK’s On The Mark program Wednesday. You can hear more on this topic by downloading that program at WKOK.com. (Codi Jade)
