Valley jobs boom from shale

MILTON – Drilling in the Marcellus Shale region of northern Pennsylvania is booming, and there is now evidence that the industry is helping The Valley too. Maria Culp, CEO of the Central Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce says jobs from the Marcellus Shale industry are being found in increasing numbers in Union and Northumberland Counties.

Culp said, “There is activity going on. There are certain companies that are looking for areas. Obviously, Great Stream Commons is a little closer to the Marcellus Shale area. There are some businesses who have moved down into our area of Upper Union County and Upper Northumberland County, related to the shale industry.”

Culp says the jobs available are being offered to local residents. She said, “There are jobs and there are not just people coming from out of the area to populate those jobs. There are actually a lot of local folks who are working in those jobs. I think the thing that I find to be especially invigorating for our economy is the fact that these are wealth creating jobs.”

She says companies in the natural gas industry are willing to pay a high wage and offer benefits to their employees. She says Penn Tech in Williamsport has a training program for those wishing to work in the Shale industry. Culp was a guest on Monday’s On The Mark program.
