March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month
SUNBURY – If you are a man or a woman 50 and older, the time may be now to get a colonoscopy. So says Trish Lilley of Central Penn Gastroenterologists in Lewisburg and says this is an important message during the month of March, which is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Lilley said, “Colon cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable.
I think unfortunately, what happens is that people tend to think of their colon and they don’t really want to discuss those things. But, it is definitely a procedure that is not difficult and it can save your life.” Lilley talked about the colonoscopy procedure, saying the procedure itself is simple.
The prep for the procedure can be difficult for some, but she recommends just eating light and sticking to clear fluids. Prevention methods at home include reducing your consumption of red and processed meats and increasing your intake of calcium and low fat dairy products. Also, getting regular exercise is recommended. To learn more, visit www.cancer.org/coloncancer. (Ali Stevens)
