Merck announces 8,500 job cuts worldwide
RIVERSIDE – Merck pharmaceutical company has announced they are cutting an additional 8,500 jobs worldwide, but it is not yet clear if that will impact the workers at the plant in Riverside. These latest job cuts are in addition to 7,500 job cuts that were announced this year also.
Locally, Merck announced in August that they were cutting 45 positions and currently, about 300 workers are employed at the plant.
Overall, Merck will lose more than 10 percent of its workforce in an effort to cut costs by $2.5-billion. Merck says half of the job cuts will come from research and development. The other half of the job cuts will come from marketing and administrative positions. (Ali Stevens)
