More opposition to Boy Scout discrimination
SHAMOKIN – Another United Way chapter is taking a stand against discrimination. The Lower Anthracite Region United Way (LARUW) is joining the Greater Susquehanna Valley chapter in withholding funds to the Boy Scouts of America.
The Boy Scouts of America is still reviewing its policy of not granting membership to homosexuals. The United Way chapters say until they resolve the issue, they will not fund the boy scouts.
According to the News Item, the board of the Lower Anthracite Region United Way decided to vote on the issue after hearing news of the Greater Susquehanna Valley chapter’s decision. The vote was unanimous.
The board later issued a statement saying they do not “condone discrimination within our community… The funds will be frozen until a final decision has been made.” (Codi Jade)
