Northumberland County eliminates jury commissioner position
SUNBURY – There will no longer be jury commissioners in Northumberland County. The commissioners voted to eliminate the elected position at yesterday’s public meeting. They say it will save the county about $200,000 annually and they have been pushing to eliminate the job for several years.
Governor Tom Corbett this week signed a new law, allowing counties in the state to eliminate the office. State lawmakers moved quickly on the bill after the state Supreme Court threw out a 2011 law under which 42 counties had gotten rid of the position. The law eliminated the need for voters to elect two jury commissioners of different parties, to develop procedures to create jury lists, manage the jury pool and ensure jurors are selected fairly.
