Northumberland woman pleads guilty to theft

DANVILLE — A Northumberland woman has pleaded guilty to stealing from her great-aunt by using her power of attorney status. The Press Enterprise reports 48-year-old Elizabeth Peterson stole nearly $16,000 from the woman, using the money to help pay her son’s college tuition at Susquehanna University and to pay for personal expenses.

The victim was in a nursing home in Mahoning Township and needed someone to handle her financial affairs, so she granted power of attorney to Peterson. Trial was scheduled to begin this week, but Peterson decided to plead guilty to three felony charges. She faces several years in prison when she is sentenced. (Ali Stevens)
