PA ACLU director coming to the Valley

NORTHUMBERLAND — The Executive Director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania will be making an appearance in the Valley this month. Reggie Shuford will be the keynote speaker at the Central Susquehanna ACLU Dinner on Sunday, February 17 at the Front Street Station.

Shuford will be discussing his views on “Overincarceration and Criminal Justice Reform.” He said there is a problem when the United States has 5% of the world’s population, but 25% of the world’s prison population. He believes there are two reasons for this strange statistic.

Shuford said, “The first is the growth of the private prison industry. It’s a money making proposition really. The people involved lobby their local and state governments to make the most extreme laws available so that you lock up more people and keep them locked up for longer periods of time. They make a lot of money that way.”

Shuford said unnecessary incarceration is another big problem. He said, “The second major reason has to do with the war on drugs. Many more people are being locked up for non-violent drug offenses. The point is, not everyone who is in prison deserves to be there. They deserve treatment.”
