Psychiatrist could be appointed in Barbour case

SUNBURY — A hearing has been scheduled to see if a psychiatrist should be appointed to evaluate a murder suspect in Northumberland County. Northumberland County Judge Charles Saylor issued the order Wednesday granting a request from attorney James Best of Sunbury, who represents Elytte Barbour of Selinsgrove. The hearing is scheduled for February 5, at the Northumberland County Courthouse. The psychiatrist can determine if Barbour is competent to stand trial.

Meanwhile, Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini must decide by January 21, whether he will seek the death penalty for Elytte Barbour and his wife, Miranda, who are both charged with the stabbing and strangling death of 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara on November 11. Both Elytte and Miranda Barbour will be formally arraigned on the charges against them on January 21. The couple has pleaded not guilty and both plan to stand trial. (Ali Stevens)
