Red Cross honors hero volunteers
LEWISBURG — The Sun Area Chapter of the American Red Cross hosted their annual Heroes Breakfast this morning in Lewisburg and honored local volunteers for their hard work. The 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award went to John Lewis from Bloomsburg, who started volunteering with the Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina and has been volunteering ever since.
Lewis said, “I’d like to thank the Red Cross for giving me the opportunity to volunteer and making me feel so good about things like this. It’s a very rewarding venture and they have lots of jobs for you.”
Other honorees included Tracy Baylor of Turkey Run Rescue, who received the Pet Hero award. Chris Bingaman received the Dr. Charles Fasano Memorial Medical Hero award for helping those diagnosed with cancer. Joe Diblin, who served during World War II, received the Military Hero Award at the age of 95.
Officers Trace Nevil and Paul Shipton received the Public Safety Heroes Award for their work patrolling Bucknell University’s campus. Pauline Roberts received the Community Impact Award for her work for Toys for Tots. John Fogarty received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his service with the Boy Scouts. There were also other awards given at this morning’s banquet. (Ali Stevens)
