Remembering a fallen officer in Shamokin
SHAMOKIN – A solemn ceremony was held last night to remember a fallen Shamokin police officer who was killed 30 years ago. Shamokin Corporal David Witmer is the only officer killed in the line of duty in the history of the Shamokin Police Department.
A ceremony for Witmer was held at his memorial at Independence and Sixth Streets last evening. Witmer was shot and killed in Trevorton. Friends and family attended the ceremony along with Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini and many local police departments. Rosini went to high school with Witmer and spoke about him as a dedicated officer and read a poem to the crowd.
Witmer was killed by 33-year-old Preston Pfiefly of Trevorton, who police say was drunk and set fire to a garage before shooting and killing Witmer on November 13th of 1983. Pfiefly died in October of this year from a gastrointestinal condition at the age of 63. (Ali Stevens)
