Remembering two killed by a drunk driver
SUNBURY – The American Legion Riders are doing what they can to remember a father and son killed by a drunk driver in July of 2012 on the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. The 2nd annual Kirk and Mayson Mahaffey Memorial Ride is Saturday at 10 a.m. starting at the American Legion in Sunbury.
Rose Heller is Kirk’s mother and said, “I am truly blessed by the outpouring support from my family, friends and the community. There are no words to express how honored I feel knowing there are so many people who are willing to support this event and help keep my boy’s memory alive and make memories for these special children.”
The memorial ride will support a non-profit organization called Magical Memories, which strives to help children who are suffering from terminal illnesses and disabilities.
Heller said, “My life has tremendously changed and my heart is forever broken. I hope everyone lives life to the fullest because you never know what tomorrow will bring. I am living my life as best as I can but will do everything to honor my boys whose lives were taken in the blink of an eye.”
Heller says she remembers Kirk as a young determined man who loved life and had a heart of gold and would do whatever he could to make a person laugh. She said he did everything for his son Mayson and was an amazing father. She says Mayson was always full of energy, could make anyone smile.”
Registration for the ride is at 10 a.m. and the ride begins at noon. Call 286-0431 for more information.
